Nighthawks score twice in second half

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Emmanuel Vargas made a game-high 11 saves in his Northern Virginia Community College debut Saturday afternoon, as the stops helped lift the Nighthawks to a 3-2 victory over Hagerstown.

The Nighthawks, who start the season 1-0-0 are back in action Thursday at Prince George's starting at 3 p.m.

In the 27th minute, the Hawks scored first on a penalty kick, but right before intermission Walter Lazo hit the equalizer on a soft kick past the diving goalie.

Following the break, Anderson Martinez picked up a loose ball and took the ball wide to beat the Hawks keeper to make it 2-1. However, five minutes later after another Nighthawks foul, Ahmed Abadir booted his shot by the NOVA wall to tie things up once again.

Then in the 75th minute with Hagerstown playing a man down after a second yellow card, Jack Carroll took a pass from Vargas and raced to the box to score the game-winner.

Defensively for the Nighthawks over the final 15 minutes, Vargas made a pair of saves to help keep the Hawks off the scoreboard and ice the game for NOVA.
